Manchester United have won once in the league in nine games, and a midweek comeback has not changed the table. Michael Carrick's side host Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday (4.30pm kick-off) in Premier League Gameweek 10, sitting 17th with seven points, according to Sports Mole, and with a long list of absentees.

The lift came on Tuesday, when United came from two goals down to beat Roma 3-2 in the Champions League, as we reported. It was a rare good night in a season that has seen league defeats to Bournemouth and Chelsea, ten goals scored in nine league games and one league win.

Who is injured for Manchester United against Aston Villa?

Benjamin Sesko is out with a recurring lower-leg problem and could be sidelined until the start of 2027, Centre Devils reports. Carlos Baleba has a hamstring injury from the Roma game and will be out for a significant period, while Manuel Ugarte is unavailable after rupturing a knee ligament on international duty with Uruguay at the World Cup. Lisandro Martinez is suspended after his red card against Chelsea.

Marcus Rashford has missed the last four matches with a hip problem and is doubtful, to be assessed before the game. Luke Shaw is expected to miss out; both sources say Carrick had indicated he would not be available, though Sports Mole lists him as a major doubt with only a slight chance. Patrick Dorgu, who has a hamstring problem from Denmark duty, is back in group training and could be in the squad.

What is Aston Villa's team news?

Villa have their own list. Amadou Onana faces a lengthy absence after rupturing an anterior cruciate ligament on World Cup duty with Belgium, Matteo Ruggeri is recovering from a hamstring injury, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka has a hamstring problem that Unai Emery said could keep him out for three to four weeks, so his availability is uncertain. Matty Cash is suspended.

Emery's team are 10th with 12 points from nine games, having won three, drawn three and lost three, Centre Devils says. They drew 1-1 with Fulham in their last league game and lost 3-0 to Barcelona in Europe.

What does this mean for the game?

United have scored ten league goals in nine games, and without Sesko the choice up front is thin. Carrick has to decide whether to trust a patched-up side to repeat the intensity of the Roma comeback, and whether a hip-affected Rashford is a risk worth taking. Villa, meanwhile, arrive with their own gaps at the back and a brief to rebound after Barcelona. With Martinez not due back until the visit of Liverpool on 22 November, this is a game United need to win to avoid sliding closer to the bottom three. The final team news will come about an hour before kick-off.
