The number has changed every day, and each change is a name. President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that 43 people had been confirmed dead in the Russian bombing of the underground school at Komyshuvakha, in Zaporizhzhia region, where civilians had gathered on Monday to collect humanitarian aid, Interfax-Ukraine reported. The search-and-rescue operation was in its fourth day. The figure keeps moving: our report on Wednesday recorded 40.
Police said rescuers had recovered 42 bodies and that 33 more people might still be trapped under the rubble, according to a related Interfax-Ukraine report. The toll began at 26, including two emergency workers and four police officers, and rose to 37 by Wednesday.
What do we know about the Komyshuvakha strike?
Euromaidan Press, citing Ukrainian officials, said Russian forces first used FAB-500 guided bombs and then dropped nine more on the shelter where people had taken cover, including a three-ton FAB-3000. Russia has not provided an account that we have seen, and these details come from the Ukrainian side. The figures should be treated as provisional while the search continues.
There is also a thread of survival. Zaporizhzhia police chief Artem Kysko said seven residents once listed as missing had been found alive and uninjured, Euromaidan Press reported, the last of them a 56-year-old woman, Olha, located on the fourth day.
What happened in the war overnight and at the Brussels talks?
Ukraine's air force said it shot down or suppressed 105 of 128 Russian attack drones launched overnight into Thursday, with four people wounded in the Dnipropetrovsk and Kyiv regions, according to the Associated Press. Russia's Defence Ministry said it downed 496 Ukrainian drones over 13 Russian regions, Crimea and the Black and Azov seas; falling debris in Ryazan damaged power lines and started a fire at an industrial site, wounding one person. Russia's Moscow-backed leader in Luhansk said a Ukrainian attack on a bus in occupied territory killed five and wounded 13, a claim we have not been able to verify independently.
In Brussels, a second day of talks at NATO headquarters ended with officials from the United States, Britain, France, Germany and the EU discussing postwar reconstruction, 2027 funding and security guarantees. Ukraine's lead negotiator, Rustem Umerov, said World Bank and BlackRock representatives attended, and Jared Kushner called the meeting productive and substantive. The European Commission sent Ukraine 4.4 billion euros from a 90 billion euro loan agreed in April.
Zelensky said the negotiations must move forward at full throttle. The next step is the meeting of Russian, Ukrainian and US negotiators in Abu Dhabi, for which the associated reports gave no dates. Until then, the figure from Komyshuvakha is the one that will keep changing.
