Calgary is about to shorten its distance to the Gulf by a stopover. Etihad Airways begins nonstop flights between Abu Dhabi and Calgary on Sunday 25 October, giving Western Canada its first direct air link with the Middle East, Aviation A2Z reported.

The airline first announced a start date of 3 November. It later moved the inaugural forward by nine days, a change AeroRoutes spotted in Etihad's schedule update in June. Calgary becomes Etihad's second Canadian destination, after Toronto.

What is the Etihad Abu Dhabi to Calgary schedule?

Aviation A2Z lists four flights a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with business and economy cabins. Flight EY29 leaves Abu Dhabi at 02:25 and lands in Calgary in the early morning, about 14 hours 35 minutes later across a distance of roughly 11,500 kilometres. The return, EY30, departs Calgary around midday.

Published schedules differ slightly on the exact return time and on the arrival minute, and AeroRoutes recorded a different day pattern in June, so confirm times and days on Etihad's booking page before you buy. Calgary Airports' original announcement, issued on 29 January 2026, described the service as four flights weekly all year round on the same four days, but with an 08:45 departure from Abu Dhabi and an 18:05 departure from Calgary, so the timings clearly moved when the start date did. Passengers booked months ago should check whether their flight was retimed, and anyone buying now should treat the early-morning Abu Dhabi departure as the current pattern.

Why does the Calgary route matter?

In the airport's release, Calgary Airports said the airport handled nearly 20 million passengers last year, and Alberta's premier, Danielle Smith, put trade between Alberta and the UAE at about 303 million dollars in 2024.

Etihad's chief executive, Antonoaldo Neves, framed the launch in January as creating "the only nonstop link between the Middle East and Western Canada", and Tourism Calgary's chief executive, Alisha Reynolds, said new routes are critical to the city's growth story. Etihad says its network covers more than 100 destinations in over 40 countries, so the Abu Dhabi hub is the gateway for onward trips. The aviation press also recalls that WestJet once secured slots for Calgary to Dubai flights but never launched them, which makes Sunday's departure the first time the city has had a direct Gulf service.

What should travellers check before booking?

  • The day pattern and departure times, which have shifted in published schedules since January.
  • Entry rules for your passport at both ends, including any electronic travel authorisation.
  • Connection times in Abu Dhabi if you are heading beyond the Gulf, because the westbound flight arrives early in the morning.

The first week of operations will show how full the cabins are. If demand holds through the northern winter, expect Calgary to start appearing in other Gulf carriers' planning.
